St James’ Church Memorial, Bushey

Born in 1891 in Bourne Valley, Branksome, Dorset, Jabez Dunbar Jobling was the son of Thomas Frederick and Ellen (née Carter) Jobling. His parents were married on 5 April 1868 in Northwood, Hampshire.


At the 1901 Census the, Jabez was nine years old and living at 7 Leyton Road, Branksome with his parents and three siblings; Percy, May and George. His father was 53 years old and was employed as a painter and decorator. He had previously been recorded as a cabinet maker. Ellen was 51 years old and Jabez’s siblings were 15, 14 and 11 years old respectively. The birthplaces are given as Cowes, Isle of Wight for Thomas and Ellen and Bourne Valley for all of the children.


At the 1911 Census, the family was still living at 7 Leyton Road, Upper Parkstone, Poole. His 63 years old father is still working as a house decorator, although now on his ‘own account’ rather than as an employee.  Jabez is 19 years old and working as a bookstall assistant. Two of his twelve siblings are also living there; 24-year-old May and 21-year-old George.

Wartime Service

Jabez was resident in Watford when he enlisted as Private 266868 with the Oxfordshire and Bucks Light Infantry. He served in France and was killed in action on16 August 1917, aged 26.

His pension card records him as ‘missing’ on 16/08/17 and names his mother, Mrs Ellen Jobling of 20 Rosebery Road, Bushey, as his dependant. She is awarded a pension of 3/6 per week with effect from 16/04/18. The house number is subsequently crossed through and changed to 24 Rosebery Road.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) for 1918 includes an entry for Jabez Dunbar Jobling of 8 Branksome Parade, Branksome, Bournemouth dated 13 November which leaves effects of £95 8s 5d to his father Thomas Frederick Jobling painter.

After the war his parents moved to ‘Dunbar’, Queen Mary Avenue, Moordown, Bournemouth.
