Ernest George JOHNSON was born in 1897, in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, son of George and Eliza Johnson.
It is believed his mother Eliza died in the early part of 1901, aged 38.
1911 Census records, Ernest aged 14, is at school, living at 2 The Village, South Mimms, Herts, the nephew of Walter and Fanny Ansell.
Wartime Service
Ernest enlisted as George Johnson in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) issued with the service number GS/63092. On completion of his training George went to France in July 1916. He served initially with the 23rd Battalion (1st Sportsman’s), then 22nd Battalion (Kensington) and finally 10th Battalion (Stockbrokers). He received a Gun Shot Wounded (GSW) in November 1916; on his recovery he returned to the Field. He was wounded in action at the Battle of the Hindenburg Line and admitted to No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station on 8th October 1918, from there he returned to England where he died on 27th October 1918. He is buried in St Giles Churchyard, South Mimms, Herts. (Battle of the Hindenburg Line 12th Sept – 12th Oct 1918).
Additional Information
His effects of £4-12s-10d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £11-10s-00d was initially to his father George Johnson but transferred to “Mrs J. Solly (sister)”.
His father George received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 28th April 1919.
