Pre War

Son of George and Elizabeth Johnson, born about 1895 in Hatfield (probably Roe Green)

In the 1901 Census, George, aged 6, was living in Roe Green with his parents and five siblings:  Berty (15), Lizzie (13), Emily (10), Ethel (4) and Willie (3). His father was working as an agricultural labourer. In 1911 Census the family were living at Chauntry Lane, Roe Green, Hatfield, his father was still an agricultural labourer and George as a farm boy. The family and been joined by another daughter Mable who was 10.  The census confirmed that his parents had been married for 20 years and of their 8 children 2 and died.

Officially recorded as born in Hatfield and enlisted there.

Wartime Service

Unusually his Medal Card does not confirm when he went overseas, however this is likely to by in 1916 and his medal do not include the Mons of 1914/15 Star. However, it does confirm some service details, i.e. he was initially Private 2334 in the Hertfordshire Regiment, then transferred to Northumberland Fusiliers (No 6096), then the York & Lancaster Regiment (No 203192) and lastly to the Machine Corps as Private No 147850.

The Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of September 1914, in the list of men mobilised from Hatfield, recorded: “Johnson, George - Roe Green - Territorial’s.” then in June 1918: “Roe Green has again suffered severely, Pte G Johnson having died of wounds on May 2nd.
