Pre War

William Joiner was born in 1897 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, the son of Edwin and Harriet Elizabeth Joiner and one of ten children. He was baptised on 28 Nov 1897 at St Lawrence Church Bovingdon.  


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bovingdon Green, Herts where his father was working as a Stockman on a Farm. They remained in Bovingdon on the 1911 Census.


(At the time of William's death his parents were living at the Royal Oak, Bovingdon. Boxmoor. They later lived at Mayland, Long Lane, Bovingdon.)

Wartime Service

William enlisted at Hemel Hempstead and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment under Reg. No. 5258. He was later transferred to the 8th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on the Somme during the attack on Grandcourt, part of the Battle of Ancre, on 18 November 1916, aged 19. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. 

Additional Information

His father Edwin received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £2 9s 1d. His mother received a pension of five shillings a week.
