Pre War

Benjamin was born in 1889 in Llangurig, Radnorshire, Wales (now Montgomeryshire) and his parents were Benjamin and Elizabeth Jones.

In 1891 the family were living at Chapel House, Llangurig, Montgomeryshire, Wales. Present were both parents: Benjamin (38) and Elizabeth (33), with Benjamin (senior) working as a tailor and draper and employer. Their children were: Margaret M (12), Jonathan H (10), Gwilym St P (5), Benjamin Herbert Pryce Jones (1). Also present was Stephen P Pryse (22) a boarder.

By 1901 the family had moved to 1 Wesleyan Row, Llangurig, Montgomeryshire. Present were both parents, his father in the same trade. Of the children previously listed Gwilym was missing and new siblings were Orlando O P (8), Richard Evan Edgar (5) and Edward Victor Lewis (2).

By 1911 Benjamin (junior)’s family were still living in Weslyan Row. Present were both parents, with Benjamin’s trade now recorded as tailor & draper, boot factor and farmer. The census recorded they had been married for 35 years with 16 children, of whom 9 had died. Of all the children listed previously only Richard and Edward were still living at home. It is not yet certain but Benjamin (junior) may be the same person as listed boarding at 16 Thompson Street, Ynysybwl, Wales – home of the Evans family and working as an electrician in a coalmine.

From the Hertfordshire Express paper we know that Benjuamin worked for Messrs. Garratt & Cannon at their Hitchin confectionary works from May 1913 until he enlisted in November 1915.

He was also a member of the Free Church Tennis Club (Hitchin).

Officially he was recorded as born in Llangurig and was living in Llangully (probably his parents’ address) when he enlisted in Hitchin.

Wartime Service

Benjamin first served as Private 9159, Royal Fusiliers and at some point became G/65751 in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers and served overseas from 23 May 1917 until his death.
