Benjamin was born in Llangurig, Montgomeryshire in 1889, his parents were Benjamin and Elizabeth Jones, of 1, Wesleyan Terrace, Llangurig, Llanidloes, Mont.


He was reported in the local papers as working for Messrs. Garratt I Cannon of the Hitchin confectionary works from May 1913 until he enlisted in November 1915.


He was also a member of the Free Church Tennis Club.
