Pre War

Harvey Jones was born in 1889 in High Street, Codicote, Herts, the son of David and Eliza (Elizabeth) Jones, and baptised on 27 October 1889 at St Giles, Codicote. He was one of nine children.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at High Street, Codicote, where his father was working as a Groom. They remained in Codicote in 1901 and 1911, at which time, Harvey’s occupation was given as Coal Carter.

Wartime Service

Harvey enlisted in Codicote with his brother Edward and they both joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, Harvey as Private 13053 and Edward as Private 13054 (their service numbers indicate enlistment in August 1914).

After basic training he arrived in France on 24 March 1915. and served initially with the 1st Battalion, later transferring to the 2nd Battalion. He was killed in action in France on 7 August 1918 and is buried at Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette, France.

Additional Information

Brother to Edward Jones who also served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and who is also named on the Codicote Memorial. His mother received a war gratuity of £19 and his father received pay owing of £3 14s 9d. She was refused a pension as she was said to be "not in pecuniary need",, however it seems that a pension was granted to Miss Elizabeth E Bates, the guardian of his child.
