Pre War
George Frederick (Fred) KIDBY was born on 27th May 1893, in Hoddesdon, Herts, son of Frederick Arthur Kidby a Surveyors Clerk and Mary Kidby (nee Elkins). One of their four children although one died in infancy. His parents were married on 4th June 1892, in Hoddesdon, Herts.
George was Baptised on 30th July 1893 in the Parish of Hoddesdon, Herts.
1901 Census records George aged 7, living with his parents, brothers Arthur (5) and Frederick (2) in North Road, Hoddesdon, Herts.
1911 Census, George (17) is an Apprentice Tailor and Cutter living with his parents, brothers Arthur and Frederick at 19 Hertford Road, Hoddesdon, Herts. His father is recorded as a Builders Clerk in the Hoddesdon Brewery Building Department.
Wartime Service
George enlisted in London in late January 1915, posted to the 9th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Queen Victorias Rifles) (The same Regiment as his brother Arthur) and issued with the service No. 4032, later when numbers were standardised 391267. On completion of his training, he was deployed to France on 6th June 1915.
George was wounded in action and died of his wounds on 30th August 1918, initially buried in Blairville Orchard British Cemetery, France, later reburied in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France. Grave Ref; VIII. L. 37.
Additional Information
A Pension card exists for his father as a dependents, but no pension amount is recorded.
His effects of £11-03-04, pay owing and his war gratuity of £17, went to his father Frederick Kidby.
His Headstone inscription “IN LIFE LOVING MUCH WAS DEARLY LOVED IN DEATH MOST DEEPLY MOURNED” was requested by; Mr. F. A. Kidby, 19 Hertford Road, Hoddesdon, Herts.
His brother of Private 2894, Arthur Kidby who was killed in Action on 3 March 1915, and who is also commemorated on these memorials.
