George Herbert Kime was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 6th September 1893, son of John Henry Kime a, Carman and Elizabeth A. Kime (nee Smith). One of Nine children.


1901 Census records George aged 8, living with his Widowed mother and six siblings in, Jubilee Terrace, High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


George attended Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, from June 1902 until July 1907, aged 14,  when he left to start work.


1911 Census records George (17), employed as a Nurseryman, living with his widowed mother and seven siblings at, 11 Lordship Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 15651. Arriving in France on 30th August 1915, seeing action the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 30th May 1916.


Battalion War Diary for the 30th May 1916. "In trenches, casualties’ other ranks 2 killed and 1 wounded". 

Additional Information

His mother Elizabeth received a supplementary allowance of 4/- a week from 12th December 1916.


His effects of pay owing were split between his Mother Elizabeth 5/3, brothers John 5/3, Charles 5/3, Sidney 5/2, sisters Gertrude 5/2, Lisy 5/2 and Ethel 5/2. His war gratuity of £7-10-00 went to his mother Elizabeth.


His Headstone inscription “SLEEP IN PEACE” was requested by his brother John E. Kime of 46 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
