Pre War

Frederick Bertie Summerfield  was born in 1895 in Nettleden, Herts, the son of Walter and Sarah Summerfield and baptised in Great Gaddesden on 15 September 1895.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Frithsden. where his father was working as a Horsekeeper on a Farm.  They remained  in Frithsden in 1911, at which time his father was a farm labourer, and 15 year old Frederick was working as a houseboy (domestic).

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford  and served initially with the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private, Reg, No. 15297 and served in France from 9 April 1915. He was later promoted and transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment as Sergeant, Reg, No. 51611.


He was killed in action on 16 April 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. 


N.B. Although his registered name is Frederick Bertie, all military records seem use the name Bert.

Additional Information

His father Walter received a war gratuity of £24 and pay owing of £1 7s 9d.
