Pre War

Frederick King was born on 27 February 1896, in King’s Langley, Herts, son of Alfred Frederick King, a Shepherd and Emma King (nee Johnson). One of three children, Annie (B 1894) & Harold (B 1901).


He was Baptised on 22 April 1896, in the Parish Church, Kings Langley, Herts.


1901 Census records Frederick aged 5, at School, living with his parents and his two siblings at, 23, Langley Hill, King’s Langley, Herts.


1911 Census records Frederick aged 15, working as a Grocers Errand Boy, living with his parents and two siblings in, Langley Hill, King’s Langley, Herts.


At the time of his enlistment Frederick was employed by John Dickinson & Co at their Home Park Mills.

Wartime Service

Frederick travelled to the County Town of Hertford, to enlisted in the Hertfordshire Regiment, he was given the service number 4930. (His service number indicates he enlisted between April & May 1915).He was later transferred to the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment with the service number 43171.


He was killed in Action on 25 March 1918, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial to the Missing in France. 

Additional Information

His mother Emma King received a dependents pension of 5/- a week until her death in 1928 when the pension was transferred to his father Alfred King. Alfred died in 1929.
The value of his effects was £15-13s-11d, Pay Owing and £13-10s-0d, War Gratuity which went to his father Alfred King.
