Pre War

George McDougall Kirkland was born in 1895 in Partick, Govan, Scotland to Hugh and Lizzie Kirkland. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 1 Winton Lane, Govan, Lanarkshire. By the 1911 Census the family had moved south and were living at Newberries, Radlett, Herts where George was a Commercial Clerk and his father was a Farm Bailiff. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in St Albans into the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and served in France from 21 April 1915.


He died on 17 June 1915 during the the second action at Givenchy. His body was not recovered for burial and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.  

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 18s 6d.
