Pre War

Wilfred was born in Norton, Hertfordshire in June 1897, the son of Ernest William and Winnifred L. Kitchener (nee Bishop). Baptised on the 4th July 1897, in Radwell, Hertfordshire.

1901 Census records William aged 3, living with his mother and brother Leslie 10 months at his grandparents hone in Radwell, Herts.

1911 Census records Wilfred aged 13, at school, living with his parents, brothers Leslie 10, Sidney 8, sisters Bessie 6 and Fannie 4, in Grange Cottages, Radwell, Herts.

On leaving school he worked for the Woodworkers of Letchworth, Herts.


Recorded as living in Letchworth when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in the County Town of Hertford and posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment, initially with the service number 5137 then 266701.

Wilfred was killed in Action on the 23rd July 1916.

At the time of his death he was attached to the 8th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.

Additional Information

His effects went to his father Ernest.
