Pre War

Born on 7 Feb 1872 and christened on 6 Mar 1872 in Surbiton, Surrey son of Col. Norton and Elizabeth Florence Paxton (Wavell) Knatchbull. Educated at Haileybury College 1885-89. He married Winifred Peel on 17 Mar 1906 and later lived in Orielton, Andover, Hampshire. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 4 Mar 1891, Lieutenant on 1 Mar 1893 and Captain on 9 Apr 1900. Served with the 1st Bn. in Nova Scotia and then in South Africa and was present at Ladysmith (1899). Mentioned in Dispatches (London Gazette 10 Sep 1901). Awarded DSO in recognition of services during the Boer War (London Gazette 27 Sep 1901). He was Adjutant 1st Bn. Leicestershire Regiment from 4 Apr 1901 to 9 Mar 1905 and served with the Ceylon Volunteers 1905-08 when he was promoted to Major (10 Sep 1908). He had one daughter.

Wartime Service

In the war, he served with the 2nd Bn. in France where he was wounded and was appointed CO in Mesopotamia on 13 Jan 1916 where he was wounded again and died of fever and heat exhaustion in Baghdad.
