Pre War

Alfred Knight was born on 15 February 1896 in St Lukes, London to Charles and Annie Knight. He attended Snowsfield School, Southwark. On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 17 Hamilton Square, Bermondsey and working as a solicitors clerk. He married Alice Mabel Lilian Ives on 28 March 1915 at St George the Martyr, Southwark, London. They had a son Alfred born on 24 November 1915. She later moved to Bishop's Stortford and lived at the Star Inn, Bridge Street and 47 Dunmow Road.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at St Paul's, London and served with the Royal Field Artillery in France from 20 September 1915 where the division concentrated at Guigenmicourt to the west of Amiens. They moved to Salonika via Marseilles in November 1915.  In August 1916 they were in action in the Battle of Horseshoe Hill when they attacked with heavy artillery fire but were eventually forced to retreat to their original positions with heavy casualties. 


Additional Information

His widow Alice received a war gratuity of £7 10s and pay owing of £2 6s 2d and also received a pension of 15s 6d from 19 March 1917.

His wife, Mrs A M L Knight of Star Inn, 7 Bridge St, Bishop's Stortford, ordered his headstone inscription: "GOD GAVE BUT GOD TAKETH AWAY LILY AND ALFIE".
