Ernest Gilbert was born in the Winchester area, to Gilbert W Knight. Little information can be found on the family. Some records state he resided in Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Ernest enlisted in 1/14 County of London Regiment (London Scottish) as Private 517415. He went to France on 17 Jul 1918.


His Battalion was deployed in the Arras area during the Battle of the Scarpe (26 – 30 Aug 1918) and an attack on 29 Aug 1918 was severely hampered by overnight rain which made the ground slippery. During this attack Ernest was killed.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £4 3s 2d was paid to his father.
