Percy Charles KRONENBERGER was born in Croydon, Surrey, on 24th April 1894, son of John Ferdinand Charles Theodore Kronenberger (a Belgium National) a Commercial Clerk and Selina Rose Kronenmerger (nee Hale). One of their three children although one died in infancy. His parents were married in the early part of 1891 in Hertford, Herts.
Percy was Baptised on 10th June 1894 at Saint Mary Magdalen, Addiscombe, Surrey. At the time the family were living at 3 Hyde Villa, Albert Road, Addiscombe, Surrey.
No 1901 Census for the family was found.
He was educated at Broxbourne C Of E Primary School, Broxbourne and Hertford Grammar School.
1911 Census records Percy aged 16, working as a Merchants Clerk, living with his parents, and sister Doroty (14), at 2 Briscoe Road, Hoddesdon, Herts.
Percy enlisted at Westminster, Londo, in the 16th (County of London) Battalion, (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) London Regiment, Territorial Force in 1911, and issued with the service No. 1400.
The family later moved to "Montrose,'' Brentwood Road, Squirrels Heath, Essex. Then, Upper Brentwood Road, Romford, Essex.
Wartime Service
When war broke out in August 1914, Percy was still serving with the Territorial Force, the Battalion was mobilised for war service, Percy volunteered for war service as he was a Territorial.
The Battalion deployed to France on 1st November 1914, landing at Le Havre. The Battalion was in trenches around Armentieres when he was killed in action on 16th April 1915, aged 21. He is buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Grave Ref; III. A. 45.
Additional Information
His effects of £3-05s-08d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father John Kronenberger.
His Headstone inscription “LORD ALL. PITYING, JESU BLEST GRANT TO HIM ETERNAL REST R.I.P.” was requested by Mr. J C. Kronenberger, of "Montrose,'' Brentwood Rd., Squirrels Heath, Romford, Essex.
The local newspaper the Essex Newsman of 1st May 1915, reported his death and stated he was a popular member of the Romford Y.M.C.A and well known as a good sportsman.
