Charlie Lake was born in Swimbridge, Weston-super-Mare in 1865 to John Lake, and Elizabeth (nee Pearse).
On the 1881 Census his parents John & Elizabeth with Lucy (born 1855), Elizabeth (born 1862), Charlie and Mary (born 1867) were living with Elizabeth’s mother Elizabeth Pearse, widow, and James Pearse, her son at 3, Unotice Terrace, Weston-super-Mare.
Charlie married Annie Phillips on 6 Feb 1888 at Wadham Street Baptist Church, Weston-super-Mare.
On the 1891 Census the family of Charlie, Elizabeth, Ernest C (born 1888) and Richard (born1891) were living at Atlantic Villa,Jubilee Road, Swimbridge, Weston-super-Mare.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Ernest C, Richard J, Bertha (born 1893), Francis (born 1894), Harold (born 1897) and Reginald (born 1898) were living at Stanley Road, Weston-super-Mare.
On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Harold, Reginald, Emmeline & Dorothy (born 1901) and Edith (born 1903) were living at 5, Walliscote Grove, Swimbridge.
Wartime Service
No Service record was found for Charlie.
He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps as Private 26970 and was promoted to Serjeant during his service which appears to have wholly in UK. His unit is described as 9 Company RAMC which was based at Colchester and supplied drafts of men to RAMC Units such as Field Ambulances, etc. Charlie was at some time resident in Tring so may have been posted to War Hospitals in that area. Charlie died on 24 Jun 1916
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £10 10s and arrears of £8 os 5d was paid to his widow, who also received a pension of 21s 6d for herself and children.
