Pre War

George was born in Kinsbourne Green Harpenden on 11 Jan 1891 to George Day, Kennel man at Herts Hunt Kennels, and Sophia (nee Pearce) .The family lived in Kennel Cottages at Kinsbourne Green. 

Wartime Service

George attested in Darlington on 9 Sep 1914 as Private 13647, giving his occupation as Kennel man.


After training at DLI Depot, Newcastle he was posted to Witley Camp as Corporal on 19 Aug 1915. He went to France on 11 Sep 1915 and and seems to have been deployed in Divisional rear echelons until he joined 15th Battalion DLI in 2 Platoon A Company on 9 Jul 1916.


He was reported wounded and Missing on 16 Sep 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. His death was presumed at a later date and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.


An undated article in the Hertfordshire Express reported:

"FIVE SOLDIER BROTHERS: ONE KILLED

Mr.  and Mrs. George Day, of Kinsbourne Green, have now been officially informed that their third son, Pte. George Day, of the Durham Light Infantry, who was reported missing on September 16th, last year, was killed in action on that day.  He joined the Army shortly after the war broke out.  Mr. and Mrs. Day have four other sons in the service, their names and regiments being, Gunner Arthur Day. R.G.A., in France, Pte. Frederick Day, Gloucestershire Regt., in Mesopotamia, Trooper Joseph O. Day, Herts Yeomanry, in Mesopotamia, and Pte. Harry Day, Hertfordshire Regt., in France."

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £9 10s and arrears of £12 18s paid to Father. Brother Frederick Willis served with Gloucestershire Regt and died in Mesopotamia Nov 1917.
