Pre War

Herbert Stanley was born in Harpenden in 1897, the son of Charles Day, a coal porter, and Maria (nee Smith).


The family lived in Cravells Road, Harpenden and on the 1911 Census Herbert was employed as a butcher’s boy. 

Wartime Service

Herbert had enlisted in St Albans. He joined the 2nd Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment.


Herbert was killed in action in France on 7 Nov 1916, his first day in the trenches, in the closing stages of the Battle of the Somme.


He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
