Percy William Day was born in Hockerill, Herts in 1894 to William Day and Agnes (nee Barrett).  


On the 1901 Census the family of parents,  Ethel M (born 1885), Mabel E (born 1890),Walter (born 1892), Agnes Bertha (born 1893), Percy W, Gladys Olive (born 1900) were living ,at Mayfield Cottages, London Road, Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford, Percy’s father was a railway signalman. A lodger Edward Hall (Ticket Collector) was also recorded.


By the 1911 Census the family of parents Mabel & Agnes (dressmakers), Percy was working as a coach painter, and Olive had moved to 14 Hockerill Street, Bishop's Stortford. 

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Percy. He enlisted as Rifleman 4671 into the Rifle Brigade and is known to have served in 2nd Battalion. His service number may have been issued in 1911 and he may have been serving overseas in India. The Battalion was recalled to UK and Percy went France with the Battalion as part of 25 Brigade, 8 Division landing at Le Havre on 7 Nov 1914. 


Percy took part in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (10-13 Mar 1915) which was initially successful but soon exposed problems. Percy was killed in action in this action. Percy’s death was recorded as 14 Mar 1915.  His remains were not recovered/identified and he is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £13 4s 5d was paid to his father.
