Pre War

The 1911 Census shows Sidney living with Father William a farm labourer, Mother Alice, Brothers Arthur and Walter, Sisters, Alice, Lilley, Jessie and Ruth at no 6 Maypole Cottages Water End. Sidney was a domestic Gardener.


Recorded as born living in North Mimms  (possibly a postal towm for Water End) when he enlisted in St Albans.

Wartime Service

He volunteered in August 1914 to join the Bedfordshire Regiment but was rejected because of his sight. He tried again in November 1914, finally being accepted in early 1915 as 20756 Bedfordshire Regiment.


He was transferred to the Essex Regiment and sent to Egypt with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and killed at Gaza.
