Pre War

Son of William Thomas and Laura (nee KING) LUMLEY of Hove, Sussex.

His parents married 3 December 1889 at St John’s, Goole, Yorks.  William died 13 October 1931 aged 66; Laura died 3 April 1954 aged 85; both in Hove.

James was born 1890 in Goole, and baptised 26 June 1890 at St John’s, Goole.

On the 1891 Census, aged 9 months he lived in Goole, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he lived in Hammersmith, London, with his parents and one sibling.  On the 1911 Census, an apprentice to the Builder’s Ironmongery, Brass-founding, hardware, etc, trade aged 20, he was a boarder in Watford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 15 August 1915, and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

There are articles about James in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 14 November 1914 and 14 October 1916 (including a Death announcement).

Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
