George Munro Machon was born in1899 in Barkway, Hertfordshire, the eldest son of Francis and Catherine Machon and one of six children although one died in infancy.


On the 1901 Census the family were living in the High Street, Barkway, where his father was working as a wheelwright and they remained in Barkway in 1911, later moving to 14 Avenue Road, Hammersmith.


Before joining the army, George had worked for the well-known wines and spirits company, W & A Gilbey.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hammersmith when he was 18 years old, initially joining the Army Service Corps under reg. no.  M/286375, later transferring to the 1st/5th Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) with whom he served for 8 months before his death.


George was killed in action on 27 August 1918, aged 19, and is buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £16 9s 7d. His mother received a pension of 13s a week.
