Henry was born in Buntingford in 1880 to Sarah and John who were the licensees of the George Inn, Buntingford.


By 1891 they had moved to Folkestone were his father was running a Lodging House. The 1901 census shows the family as living in Chiswick High Road. and  in 1911 he was living with his widowed mother and brother in Gold Hill, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. He was working as a ledger clerk.
