Watford Borough Roll of Honour

Son of John and Catherine Ann (nee SMITH) MACKEN of Watford.

His parents married 1886 in the Kensington, London, district.  John died 1930 in the Staines, Middx, district aged 67; Catherine died 1954 in Watford aged 87, and was buried 24 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

Gerald was born 21 May 1893 in Kettering, Northants.  He attended Fenton School, Haverfordwest, Pemb, from 3 September 1900; then Warren Street School, Tenby, Pemb, from 21 Ocrober 1901 to 29 September 1905.  He resided in St Margaret’s, Surrey.

On the 1901 Census, aged 7 he lived in Narberth, Pembs, with his grandmother and one sibling.  On the 1911 Census, a clerk in a physical laboratory aged 17, he lived in Twickenham, Surrey, with his mother and four siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Richmond, Surrey, and was formerly Private 1215 6th East Surrey Regiment and Private 6990 7th London Regiment. 

He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was presumed killed in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Gerald’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. Recorded as Sergeant only in the Borough Roll of Honour.
