Pre War
George Manning was born on 12 September 1898 in Kennington, Surrey and is believed to be the son of Owen and Emily Manning who were living in Lambeth in 1891, although it has not been possible to verify this.
Prisoner of war records give his home address as 38 Mingford Gardens, Kensington, London.
Following his death, he was recorded as the son of Mrs. E. P. Bramwhite, of 21, Bygrave Rd., Baldock, Herts.
Wartime Service
George enlisted in Mill Hill, Middlesex and initially joined the Essex Regiment, under reg. no. 10317. He was later transferred to the 1st/5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment where he served with D Company.
According to German prisoner of war records he was captured at Harvelley Wood on 22 March 1918 and held at Limburg, followed by Trier from 28 July 1918 and died from septicaemia following a wound to the right lower leg. This was officially accepted by British military records. He is buried in Cologne Cemetery, Germany.
