Pre War
Edward Charles Mantle was born in Milton Regis, Kent in 1887, the son of Charles and Matilda Mantle (nee Belsham), and baptised on 10 April 1887 at Milton-next-Sittingbourne. Kent. He was one of five children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 110 High Street, Milton, Kent, where his father was working as a blacksmith's assistant. His mother died in 1898 aged 34 and his father remarried to Alice Flisher. They remained in Milton in 1901 but had moved to 15 Church Street, and his father was then working as an iron foundry labourer.
On the 1911 Census his father and stepmother were living at 29 Barrett Road, Milton Regis, Kent but Edward was not with them. They later lived at Red Lodge, Piccotts End, Hemel Hempstead and were registered there in 1921. As the above address was given after Edward's death it is likely that he had no direct connection to Piccotts End.
Wartime Service
He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment, initially as Private No. L/9443 (number later changed to L/13425), and served in the Asiatic Theatre from 17 August 1915.
He died in the Military Hospital, Chichester, Sussex on 23 June 1920, aged 33, and is buried in Portfield Cemetery, Chichester.
Additional Information
His father received pay owing of £17 9s 3d. No pension records have been found.
