Pre War

Stanley Swaby was born on 25 September 1892 in Albury, Herts, son of James Swaby (a Railway Platelayer for the LNWR) and Sarah Swaby (nee Crawley), one of eight children.


He was Baptised on 4 December 1892, in the Parish Church, Albury, Herts.


1901 Census records Stanley aged 8, living with his parents, and six siblings in Albury, Herts.


1911 Census records Stanley aged 18, single, working as a Cowman, living at home with his parents and four siblings at, 2, Fog Cottages, Tring Station, Tring, Herts.


He married Annie Swaby who died in 1917.

Wartime Service

Stanley enlisted at Mill Hill, posted to the Royal Field Artillery, with the service number 48962.


His Medal Card shows he arrived in France on 4 September 1915.


He died of Malaria in Hospital in Salonika on 8 October 1916, he is buried in the Salonika (Lambert Road) Military Cemetery, Greece. Grave Ref; 545.


The 101st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, served with 22nd Division. The Division was established in September 1914, as part of Kitchener’s Third New Army. The Division started it's training in the area around Eastbourne and Seaford, the Artillery were based at Lewes. They proceeded to France in September 1915. In October, they moved by train to Marseilles and from there they Embarked for Salonika on 27 October.

His mother Sarah received his Pay Owing of £12-18s-9d, and a War Gratuity of £9.


Stanley is also commemorated on his wife's headstone in Aldbury (St. John the Baptist) cemetery his inscription reads:

“. . . ALSO OF STANLEY SWABY WHO DIED AT SALONIKA OCTOBER 8TH 1916 AGED 24 YEARS THE STRIFE IS OVER THE BATTLE DONE I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVETH”
