Pre War

Son of William Thomas and Emma (nee HALL) MARDLE.

His parents married 9 October 1889 at St Michael’s, St Alban’s, Herts.  William died 13 September 1941 in Oxhey, Herts, aged 77, and was buried 17 September in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

William was born 1891 in Watford, and baptised 4 March 1891 at St Mary’s, Watford.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, aged four months he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and one sibling.  On the 1911 Census, a brewer’s drayman aged 20, he still lived in Watford, with his father and one sibling.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 27 April 1915, and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras, an attack on La Coulette.

Additional Information

There are articles about William in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 15 May 1915, 26 June 1915 and 5 May 1917; the latter includes a Death announcement.

Unfortunately, William’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
