Pre War

Sidney Arthur Markwell was born in 1898 in Bishops Stortford to Henry and Maud Markwell.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Trinity Street, Bishop's Stortford where his father was a house decorator.

They were still in Trinity Street, Bishop's Stortford living at no. 22 in 1911.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Hertford and served with the Hertfordshire Regiment.

He died of wounds received during the Battle of the Somme, probably at the 2nd or 44th Casualty Clearing Stations which were at Puchevillers at the time.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 10s and his father received pay owing of £4 14s 2d. His father Henry received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 6 November 1918. H A Markwell Esq, 22 Trinity Street, Bishop' s Stortford, Herts
