Pre War

Albert was the son of George and Julia Marlow, born on the 25th of December 1891 in Offley and was educated in the village, where he later worked as a gardener in the kitchen gardens at the Bury, King's Walden.


The 1911 Census has Albert living at Gable Cottages, Offley, Hitchin, Herts and occupation as a Farm Labourer. Hilda Marlow (nee Webb), Chestnut Row, Lilley and they were married at St Peter's, Lilley. They had a daughter, Ella Maud, born on the 24th of March 1913.


He enlisted in Offley on the 2nd of September 1914 

Wartime Service

He was originally No. 13893 in the Bedfords and later moved to the Hampshire Regt. He saw service in Salonika from the 22nd of September 1915. He was invalided to England in June of 1918 as a result of malaria fever, returning to France in July 1918.


Albert was wounded on the 28th of August and died from his wounds at Number 46 Clearing Station on the 30th of August 1918. He was buried at Bac-du-Sud, south-west of Arras.


An article in the Hertfordshire Express of the 14th of September 1918 reports that Mrs Marlow had received news that Albert had died. He had been badly wounded in the hand and leg, and was only able to give the address of his wife as he lay in the dressing station before the end came. 

Additional Information

He had a brother called Bert, who was in training with the Air Force at the time of his death.
