Pre War

George Marriott was born in 1893 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, the son of James and Louisa Marriott and one of eight children. 


The family were living in Green Lane, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Herts on the 1901 Census, when his father was Horseman on a Farm. They remained in Green Lane, Bovingdon at the time of the 1911 Census, at which time George was working as a gardener. He later worked for John Dickinson & Company at Apsley, Herts. 


The 1939 Register lists his parents living at No. 6 Green Lane, Bovingdon. 

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Hemel Hempstead and initially joined the Bedford Regiment under Reg. No. 26180, later transferring to the 7th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on the opening day of the Battle of Pilckem Ridge near Ypres. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £4 1s 7d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week. Brother of Private William Marriott who was killed in action on 23 Oct 1918 and who is also named on the Bovingdon Memorials.
