Pre War

Born in Blakesley, Northamptonshire in 1886 and baptised on 7 November 1886, John William Oliver Marshall was the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (nee Oliver) Marshall. His parents were married on 23 June 1885 in Litchborough, Northants and Ebenezer, who named himself Eber in the marriage register, was employed as a labourer.

At the 1891 Census, John was 4 years old and living in Blakesley with his parents and his 2-year-old sister, Ethel. Eber was aged 26 and working as an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth is 35 years old. The birthplaces are given as Epwell in Oxfordshire for Eber, Litchborough in Northants for Elizabeth and Blakesley for both of the children.  By the time of the 1901 Census, the family had moved to Kettering Road in Burton Latimer, Northants. and Eber is working as a stockman (cattle) on a farm.

John married Mabel Julia York on 7th July 1908 in the parish of Overstone, Northants. John was recorded as a labourer and Mabel a domestic servant. John gave his address as Burton Latimer and Mabel as Overstone.

At the 1911 Census, John and Mabel were living at The Cottages, a seven-room residence in Herstmonceux, Sussex. Both are aged 24 and have a 2-year-old daughter called Irene. John is working as a cowman on a farm.

Wartime Service

John enlisted in 1916, aged 29, in Watford as Private 35329 in the Middlesex Regiment.  He transferred to the Labour Corps, serving on the home front, and died at home on 24 August 1917. He was buried in Moulton Cemetery in Northampton and is commemorated on the Bushey Memorial and at St Peter’s Church, Bushey Heath.

Soldiers Died in the Great War records him as Private 162774 in 6th Company of the Labour Corp and names his widow Mabel Julia and one child Winifred Mabel. The Register of Soldiers’ Effects names Mabel as his beneficiary.

His pension record card states that John died from Tuberculosis of the Lung and gave Mabel’s address as 23 Primrose Gardens, which is subsequently crossed through and changed to 2 Church Street, Moulton, Northants. The date of birth for Winifred is given as 15 March 2013, but there is no mention of Irene. A grant of £5 was awarded on 8 September 1917 and a pension of 18s./9d. with effect from 4 March 1918.
