Pre War
Alfred Edgar MARTIN was born in1885, in Highbury, Middx, son of Joseph Martin a Commercial Clerk and Helena Dinah Martin (nee Pearman). One of ten children although 1 died in infancy.
1891 Census records Alfred aged 6, living with his parents, two brothers, Joseph (11) Edmond (4), and four sisters, at 62 Lincoln Road, Finchley, Middx. The family had a live-in Domestic Service.
1901 Census, Alfred, his parents, 3 brother and 5 sisters are still living at 62 Lincoln Road, Finchley.
Alfred married Victoria Julia Charlotte Reynolds, the daughter of Robert Dunning and Lilly Reynolds on 8th November 1910, at East Finchley Congregational Church, East Finchley, Middx. They went on to have two children, Helena Lilly born in September 1911 and Margaret Ethel born March 1915.
1911 Census records Alfred (26) married to Victoria, he is employed as an Assurance Clerk, they were living at “Danebank” Sylvester Road, North Finchley, Middx. The family would later moved to South Mimms, Herts.
Wartime Service
Alfred travelled to Dukes Road, Mill Hill, London, the HQ of the London Regiment to enlist on 25th November 1915, posted to the Army Reserve the following day. He was mobilized for war service on 16th November 1916, posted to the 1st/28th (County of London) Battalion (Artist Rifles) and issued with the service number 9534 later 763536. On completion of his training he was sent to France, embarking at Southampton on 19th March 1917, arriving the following day 20th at Le Havre. At some time, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Alfred was wounded in action, reported missing and presumed died on 30th December 1917.
He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, to the missing in France. Pier and Face 12C. At the time of his death, it is believed he was serving with 8th Platoon, “B” Company.
Additional Information
Victoria was awarded a widow’s pension of 25/5 (£1-5s-5d) a week from 9th October 1918, and his effects of £8-2s-4d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4.

His youngest brother 13465 Sargent Edwin John (Jack) Martin, MM, of the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) was Killed in Action on 15th April 1918.
