Thomas Edwin Martin was born 1886 in Hendon, Middx to Thomas Martin, a coachman, and Elizabeth (nee Wright).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Thomas, Nelly (born 1888) and William (born 1891) were living at Portsdown Cottage, 1, Golders Green, Hendon.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Thomas, Nelly, William, Alice (born 1893), Edward (born 1897) were living at Portsdown Cottage, Golders Green, Hendon. Also recorded was Martha Woodward, a visitor.
On the 1911 Census Thomas was not found. His parents, Nelly (bookkeeper), Alice (hairdresser) and Edward were living at stables, 296, Finchley Road, Hampstead.
His father, Thomas Martin, later lived at The Queen's Arms, New Mill, Tring, Herts.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Thomas Edwin who was enlisted in 21st (Empress of India’s) Lancers , their war service was entirely in India, as Trooper 24809 probably in their 2nd (Service) Squadron, however he was transferred to the Queens (West Surrey Regiment, army nickname ‘the Mutton Lancers from their lamb & flag Cap badge) as Private G/22710 and was posted to 2nd, 10th, 6th and 7th Battalions which would suggest most of his service was with them.
In 1918 the 7th Battalion as part of 55 Brigade, 18th (Eastern Division took part in the Battle of Amiens (8 -11 Aug 1918). Thomas was reported killed in action on 8th or 10 Aug 1918 depending on reports, His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
