Pre War

Charles Henry was born on 31 Aug 1897 in Monken Hadley, Barnet to William Horace Maskell and Sarah (nee Hodsdon). Charles was christened at St Mary the Virgin, Monken Hadley on 14th Nov 1897.


On the 1910 census Charles together with his Mother, Father, and Brothers William, Albert John, Horace Desmond were living at High Road, Monken Hadley, Barnet. Father William Horace died in 1907 and on the 1911 Census Charles and his Brothers were living with his widowed mother at the same address.

Wartime Service

Charles was enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment as Private 48409 probably in Sep 1916 and was posted to 1st (Reserve) Garrison Battalion at Gravesend.


He died at Gravesend and is buried in Bells Hill Burial Ground.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. S. Maskell, 3, Taylor's Lane, Hadley, High Barnet, ordered his headstone inscription: "NOT MY WILL LORD BUT THY WILL BE DONE".

Not eligible for War Gratuity. Arrears of £2 2s 8d was paid to his mother.Brother Alfred served with Royal Army Medical Corps as Private 72937 and survived.
