Pre War

Sidney James Mason was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1894, the only son of Sidney James Mason a, Cordite Chargehand at the Royal Gunpowder Factory and Catherine (Casey) Mason.


1901 Census records Sidney Jr. aged 6, living with his parents at, 4 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census Sidney Jr. (17), has left school and working as Lamp Maker, living with his parents still at 4 Prospect Road, Cheshunt.

Wartime Service

Sidney Jr. enlisted on 28th February 1916, posted to the 14th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) a Training Reserve Battalion and issued with the service number 41426.


He was discharged on 23rd July 1916, under Para 392 (XVI) K.R. Sickness.


He was issued the silver War Badge No. 117668, on 20th January 1917.


He died at Hill End Hospital on 19th January 1919, aged 24. He is buried in the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

Additional Information

Sidney Jr. was not awarded a Medal as he did not serve overseas.


The inscription on his Headstone reads “ALSO HIS FATHER SIDNEY JAMES 2ND NOVEMBER 1924 AGED 65 AND MOTHER CATHERINE 26TH DECEMBER 1914 AGED 70”. It is not known who requested it.


The CWGC Headstone records, gives the inscription as “BE YE ALSO READY” requested by Mr. S. J. Mason, Providence Cottages, 62 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts. This inscription is not on his Headstone.


Sidney is also commemorated on his father's headstone in the cemetery on which his inscription: ALSO OF SIDNEY SON OF THE ABOVE WHO DIED 19TH JANUARY 1919 AGED 23(*1) YEARS.
