Born on 15 Nov 1882 in Ponder’s End, Middlesex and baptised on 28 Jan 1883 in Enfield son of James Thomas and Gertrude Matthews and was living in West Hill Cottage, Hoddesdon in 1911. He was a house painter. He married Edith Mary Matthews and they lived in 31 Hertford Road, Hoddesdon.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hoddesdon and was killed in action.

Additional Information

Brother of Leading Seaman Frank Richardson Matthews who was killed on 15 Aug 1916 and is also commemorated on these memorials.
