This may be 15753 Private William Charles Matthews who enlisted into the Scots Guards on the 18th June 1916 and was discharged on the 7th May 1918 and died of chronic nephritis. No association with Hitchin has been found.
Another possibility is Guardsman Willie Mathews (note spelling) who was born and resided in Hornsey in London and enlisted in London, joining the Scots Guards with the Regimental Number 9319. He was killed in action on the 27th September 1915. He has no known grave and is remembered on Panels 8-9 of the Loos Memorial to the Missing in France. Again no association with Hitchin has been found.
No association to Hitchin could be found among the 127 men of this name in ‘Soldiers died’ database as having been born, enlisting or residing there. In future years it may be possible to identify this person when the soldiers personal papers are released by the Ministry of Defence to the Public Record Office at Kew. Unfortunately, many of the papers were destroyed or damaged by bombing during the Second World War.
