Ernest was the son of Herbert & Jane Elizabeth Mayes.

Wartime Service

On the 19th June 1915 Ernest was asleep in a trench along with another Benington resident, Reginald Jack Warner, when a German shell fell amongst them, killing them both. The body of Ernest Mayes was recovered and buried but that of Reg Warner was never found and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate in Ypres.
