Pre War

William Mayling was born on 3 April 1896 in Ringshall, Bucks, the son of Frank and Sarah Ann Mayling and one of 4 children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at No. 26 Ringshall,  where his father was working as a Woodman (Forester). 


He was educated at Little Gaddesden School from April 1889 and left in November 1908 with a Certificate of Proficiency which enabled him to leave school and go to work at only 12 years 7 months of age.


On the 1911 Census the family were living at 24 Ringshall, Great Berkhamsted, Herts and William was working as a domestic gardener's boy on the Ashridge estate.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Hertford and served with the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment.


On 3rd September 1916 he died, aged 20, in the 3rd Southern General Hospital, Oxford following active service overseas. He died from illness, believed contracted in the trenches and  had suffered from infective endocarditis for 3 months and heart failure for 7 days.  He was buried in Little Gaddesden churchyard 4 days later. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £10 10s 5d.
