Pre War

Frank Maynard was born in South Mimms/Hadley Wood, Middx, depending on the document, son of Thomas Maynard a Timber Yard Labourer and Elizabeth Maynard (nee Watson). One of thirteen children although one died in infancy.


His parents married on the 11th February 1883, in Datchworth, Herts.


1901 Census records Frank aged 8, living with his parents, six brothers and sister Mabel (10) in High Road, High Stone, Monken Hadley, Herts.


1911 Census, Frank aged 18 is employed as a Carter, living with his parents, six brothers and sister Mabel (20) at 6 Linden Villas, Bruce Road, Barnet, Herts. His father Thomas is recorded as a Coal dealer and Carter Contractor.

Wartime Service

Frank enlisted at Barnet, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 25941, later transferred to the 9th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, with the service number 26071.


Frank was Killed in Action on 3rd September 1916, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France to the missing. Pier and Face 11A.


(We believe Frank was attached to the 20th Battalion, Manchester Regiment at the time of his death, possible killed at the Battle of Delville Wood) (Battle of Delville Wood 14th July – 3rd September 1916, part of the Battle of the Battle of the Somme 1st July – 18th November 1916). 

Additional Information

His mother received a Dependents Pension of 7/- a week from 21st August 1917.


His effects of £2-15s-09d pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father Thomas.
