Pre War
John McDonald was born in 1897, in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, son of John McDonald a Police Constable and Elizabeth Mary McDonald, (nee Green). One of five children.
His parents were married on 2nd July 1893, at St. Giles Church, Camberwell, London.
1901 Census records John Jr. aged 4, living with his parents, and sisters Amy (6) and Mabel (5 months), in South Mimms Village, Herts.
1911 Census, John Jr. aged 14, has left school and is employed as an Apprentice Printer, living with his parents, Sisters, Amy (16), Mable (10), Ada (2) and brother Victor (7), at 11 Upper Belsize Terrace, Hampstead, London & Middx.
His father John McDonald died in 1919, aged 53.
Wartime Service
John Jr. enlisted at St Pancras, London, posted to the Royal Field Artillery, and issued with the service number 98677. On completion of his training, John Jr. arrived in France in July 1915, with “C” Company, 79th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, initially in Saint Omer, France, later moving to the Southern Ypres Saliant front line.
John jr. was Killed in action on 16th November 1915, aged 18, he is buried in Strand Military Cemetery in Belgium. Grave Ref: VII. A. 35/37.

His effects of £4-03s-08d, pay owing went to his father John, his war gratuity of £5-10s-00d, went to his mother Elizabeth.
