Pre War

Roy James George McGee was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 23rd April 1898, son of George Muir McGee a, Mechanical Engineer and Mable (Child) McGee. The eldest of 3 children.


He was Baptised at St. James Church, Enfield Highway, Middex, on 21st August 1900.


1901 Census records Roy aged 2, living with his parents, at 202 Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census records Roy aged 12, at school and a Butchers Boy, living with his parents, sister Molly (7) and brother Terence (6) at, 56 Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts.


The family later moved to 23 Turners Hill, Cheshunt.

Wartime Service

Roy enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve in October 1916, giving his date of birth as 23rd April 1897, (trough date 23rd April 1898), posted to HMS “Vivid”, (a Shorebase) Devenport, Plymouth, on 9th October 1916, and issued with the service number 12495 D.A.


On 27th October 1916, he was transferred to HMS “Victory”, (a training establishment) Portsmouth, Hampshire. His first ship was HM Motor Launch No. 526. Serving aboard her from 18th January 1917. Transferring to HM Motor Launch No. 549, on 12th May 1917. While aboard HM Motor Launch No. 549, he was washed overboard and drowned in the North Sea, his body was never recovered, he is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Chatham, Kent, to the missing at sea.  

Additional Information

His mother was refused a Dependents Pension.


Roy is also commemorated on a family headstone in Cheshunt Burial Ground, his part of the inscription reads:
