Arthur Mead was born in 1881 in Wigginton, Herts, the son of James Mead (B 1855 in Wigginton) and Louisa Mead (nee Busby) (B 1847 in Wigginton) He was one of five children.


1881 Census records Arthur aged 3 months, living with his parents and sister Ann 10, in Wood Row, Wigginton, Herts.


1891 Census records Arthur at school, living in Clay Hill, Wigginton, with his parents, sister Ann, Alice 13, brothers Frederick 6 and Leonard 3.


In the 1901 Census Arthur was working as a General Labourer, living at home with his parents, brothers Frederick and Leonard in Clay Hill, Wigginton. His married sister Ann Kitchender was also staying with them.


In 1911 Arthur was still living in Clay Hill, Wigginton, and living with his parents and brother Fred. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford, Beds and was posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the Service No. 27768.


Arthur was Killed in Action on 27th June 1917, and is buried in the CWGC Philosphe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. Grave Ref;  I. S. 37. 

Additional Information

The value of his effects were £5-15s-6d, Pay Owing and £5, War Gratuity which went to his father James.
