Pre War

Son of Emma (nee ATKINS) MEAD of Watford, and the late Arthur George MEAD.

His parents married 1886 in the Watford district. Arthur died 1911 in Watford aged 38, and was buried 24 June in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Emma died 1940 in King’s Langley, Herts, aged 81, and was buried 2 January 1941 at All Saints, King’s Langley.

Arthur was born 28 September 1896 in Watford, and baptised 8 November 1896 at Christ Church, Watford.  He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 5 January 1903 to 23 September 1910.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 4 he lived in Abbot’s Langley, Herts, with his mother and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, aged 14, he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hatfield, Herts; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 11 November 1914, and was killed in action.

Unfortunately, Arthur’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
