Pre War

Born on 8 Sep 1882 in Hertford and baptised on 11 Dec 1882 in Hertford son of James Driver and Susan Medcalf.


He lived at 38 Queen’s Road, Hertford in 1891 where his father was an auctioneer. He was living and working as a draper’s assistant in Hackney in 1901. He travelled to Canada where he was a farmer and was a member of the 68th Prince Rupert Militia before WW1.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Victoria, BC, Canada on 11 Nov 1914 and returned to Europe to fight. He was killed in action during an attack at Festubert.

Additional Information

Initially buried at Indian Village, Festubert, 2¾ miles west of La Bassee and later relocated.


Harold is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Hertford (All Saints) Churchyard. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO THE BELOVED SON OF THE ABOVE
HAROLD CHRISTIE METCALFE 16TH CANADIAN SCOTTISH DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED AT FESTUBERT
MAY 19TH 1915. AGED 23 YEARS
