Albert Edward Dell was born in 1885, in Wigginton, Herts, son of David Dell (B 1844 in Wigginton) and Elizabeth Dell (nee Batchelor) (B 1846 in Wigginton) the youngest of 10 children, 3 of which died in infancy.
1891 Census records Albert aged 5, at school, living with his parents, brothers James 25, Frederick 20, William 14, Herbert 11, Walter 8 and sister Rosina 16, at The Pheasant, Wigginton, Herts.
1901 Census records Albert aged 15 and working as a Farm Labourer, living at home with his parents, brothers Herbert 21 and Walter 18, at The Bottom, Wigginton, Herts.
On 5th May 1906 in the Parish Church, Wigginton, Herts, Albert married Beatrice Smith of Tring, Herts.
1911 Census records Albert as married with a daughter Gladys 4, and a son Reginald 2, also living with them is his wife Beatrice's widowed mother Agnes Smith. at The Bottom, Wigginton, Herts. His occupation is given as a Stocker.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted in Watford, Herts, in September 1914, for 3 years or the duration of the war and posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the Service No. 13438. Later transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps with the Service No. 5404. He landed in France in October 1915, He died of his wounds at No. 107, Field Ambulance on 3rd May 1918.
He is buried in the CWGC Hedauville Communal Cemetery Extension in France. Grave Ref; A. 10.
Additional Information
The value of his effects were £13-14s-6d, Pay Owing and £17, War Gratuity which went to his widow Beatrice.
The war pension records show he had 5 children four daughters and one son. Beatrice and the children received a weekly pension of £1-17s-11d per week.
