Pre War

John Barnard Millard was born in 1890 in Bishop's Stortford to John William and Clara Emily Millard and baptised on 8 October 1890 at St Michaels, Bishop's Stortford. On the 1891 Census the family were living on the High Street where his father was a Clerk in the Post Office. On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 54 New Town Road, Bishop's Stortford and working as a Clerk in an Insurance Office.


Wartime Service

He served in France from 23 January 1915 having initially enlisted into the Honourable Artillery Company as a Lance Corporal under service no. 2393. He was Commissioned into the East Kent Regiment on 14 February 1917.  He was killed in action on 25 June 1917 near Ypres.

Additional Information

Administration of his estate was granted to John William Millard civil servant, on 17 October 1917, with effects of £118 7s 9d. Address given as Newtown Road, Bishop's Stortford. His father received a war gratuity of £13 10s.
